Abstract
The study examined the effect of Behaviour Intervention on adolescents’ sexual risk-behaviour. 120 adolescents comprising ( males 56, mean age = 19 years ) and (females 64, mean age= 18.6 years) were selected purposely from a population of 1168 SS11 students in the eight public schools in Awka urban using a survey study . The participants that had high mean score of sexual risk – behaviour, in the survey study, from a sexual risk-behaviour test (males’ mean score =47, females’ mean score = 42) were selected for intervention training. The test has a validity of .94 and a reliability of .82. The subjects were randomly assigned into the three treatment groups, namely: Assertive group, self control group and control group, with 40 adolescents in each group. A random group design with three independent variables and a Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were used for the study. The result of the data analysis showed that participants’ scores on the test for those that participated in intervention training in assertive and self-control groups differed significantly from those participants in the control group (P =.03).However, the Scheffe pair-wise comparison test indicates that those in assertive training group had greater change (P=.017).The study concludes that Behaviour Intervention (assertive training and self-control training) had significant effect on adolescents’ sexual behaviour .

Abstract
The author examined the effective and ineffective coping mechanisms of English language undergraduate students during the total lockdown in Nigeria as a result of the Corona Virus (COVID-19) global pandemic. The participants in the study were twenty undergraduate students of English language in a state university. The students were interviewed on telephone on their coping styles during lockdown as a result of the
COVID-19 global pandemic. Their responses were recorded on the phone, transcribed, and thematically analysed using qualitative methods. Results show that they used such effective coping mechanisms as having a positive attitude towards the lockdown, and therefore used the opportunity for reading novels, writing poems, playing and dancing music at home, and painting/drawing. Other effective coping activities reported were: Having quiet moments for meditation and prayers, home physical exercises and aerobic, sleeping/resting, watching television and movies, gardening/farming, family bonding/reunion, and expected/desired pregnancy. Some of them also reported some ineffective ways of coping, such as denial of reality of COVID-19, feeling anxious, boredom/loneliness, weight gained, substance abuse/use, domestic violence, unwanted pregnancy, longing for intimate sexual partner, being angry with the governments
because of food-shortage/starvation, and obsessive-compulsive behaviour. The author concludes that the effective coping mechanisms would enhance their proficiency in English language, and should be encouraged; while the ineffective ways of coping would definitely be detrimental to their future professions and life in general, and should be discouraged.Original price was: ₦8,000.00.₦5,000.00Current price is: ₦5,000.00. -

Abstract
In this paper, the concept of genuineness, as expressed by Carl Rogers in ClientCentered Psychotherapy, is the platform on which efforts of some Nigerian citizens and governments to curb the spread of corona virus (COVID-19) is discussed. The genuineness in seeing COVID-19 as real, the political goodwill, the sincerity in
administering the COVID-19 funds, in carrying out the internationally mapped out measures to contain the virus, and in the distribution of the palliatives to cushion the adverse effects of the lockdown, are questioned. A call for attitudinal change on the part of the concerned citizenry and the governments are therefore made.Original price was: ₦8,000.00.₦5,000.00Current price is: ₦5,000.00. -

This paper highlights not only the above lacuna but also describes the important aspects of psychotherapy training in the Western world. It went further to describe current efforts being made in Nigeria to establish a world-class tertiary institution, the School of Psychotherapy and Health Sciences (SPHS), which takes it lead from modern psychotherapy training programmes in Austria. The SPHS in Nigeria has also been affiliated Sigmund Freud University, Austria. Students from SPHS will be trained by qualified staff from Nigeria and from Austria, and they will be properly equipped with psychotherapeutic skills that will enable them to address the emotional problems of Nigerians, in which ever work-setting they find themselves. They will also be registerable the World Council for Psychotherapy and with other psychotherapy organisations world-wide.

Meseron Therapy

Abstract
Meseron therapy was developed by Alfred Awaritefe in 1995, the word Meseron is an
Urhobo word which means “I reject it”. The core component in Meseron therapy is the
power of the spoken word which cuts across cultural and religious boundaries. A general
opinion is that words are powerful; they can make or mar, indeed, life and death are said to
lie in the tongue. [Prv. 18:21] The Urhobos characteristically reject the unwholesome by
saying “Meseron” i.e. “I reject it” at the mention of anything unwholesome. Incidentally this
practice has found its way into conventional expression among Nigerians as reflected in an
increased sensitivity to reject the unwholesome, unwelcome and unpleasant with phrases like
“I reject poverty”, “I reject ill health” “it is not my portion” “God forbid” and so on. This
widespread “I reject it” mind-set makes Meseron therapy a viable tool in clinical practice if
well harnessed. Meseron therapy possess therapeutic strength and value with its undertone of
optimism and resilience. However, Meseron therapy does not subscribe to empty optimism,
the flipside of rejecting the unwholesome is accepting the wholesome. Research evidence
abound on its use in therapeutic interventions like the management of fear, emotional
disorder, as an antidote to stress etc. Meseron therapy also compares favourably well with
western therapies of cognitive and motivational perspectives. This paper attempts to expose
the rich theoretical viewpoints of Meseron therapy with the hope that its use in research/
clinical practice will be further enhanced.₦3,000.00 -

Abstract
Insight has been found to be an integral component that ensures success in most psychiatry
treatment. It appears that, the more the client can understand the cause of the illness, the
greater their chances of resolving their unpleasant experience. Insight-oriented
psychotherapy is a client-centred therapy, a talk therapy that guides clients toward
developing and understanding of self. It assumes that the client is healthy and their problem
is a result of faulty-thinking. This study focused on testing the efficacy of insight oriented
therapy in improving participants’ level of illness awareness. Forty three (43) inpatients
from a federal government mental health facility were purposively selected based on
referrals for individualized insight oriented therapy for a 12-session program. Participants
responded to Beck Cognitive Insight Scale prior and after intervention (pre-posttest).The
participants were made up of 23 males and 20 females with an average age of 32.21 9.31
who entered therapy session upon referrals. The results revealed that insight oriented
therapy had a significant impact on the level of the study sample’s insight
[ t(42)= 47.429 p<.01]. Conclusively, insight oriented therapy has been
found in this study to be efficacious in the management of patient with poor insight. Authors
suggested that more clinical trials should be carried out to test It’s efficacy in larger samples
and with control samples.₦3,000.00 -

Abstract
The present study was on the investigations of the psychometric properties of Sternberg
Thinking Style Inventory (TSI) in Nigeria. Eight hundred and seventy eight (878) adult
participants recruited from 3 cardinal regions representing 3 major ethnic groups in Nigeria
were involved in the study. They included 587 males and 291 females from diverse
occupations including teaching, civil service, military, police, clergy and university
undergraduates. TSI by Sternberg and Wagner (1991) was administered to the participants
to determine the construct validity of the 13 different subscales of the instrument in Nigerian
participants. Exploratory factor analysis, reliability statistics and 2 WAY MANOVA statistics
were used for data analysis. The result of the study showed one factor extraction using the
Principal Component Analysis (PCA) at eigen value greater than 1.However when the
method of percentile of variance extracted was used (Pett, Lackey & Sullivan, 2003) 6
components were extracted. Conversely moderate positive correlations existed among the
various subscale of the TSI. On the other hand significant occupation differences were found
among various occupations on TSI suggesting good level of discriminatory validity based on
occupation. However, TSI did not correlate with measure of cognitive mental task called
puzzle game. Overall, TSI showed to be a promising inventory for Nigeria population but
more research works are needed to position the inventory for Nigerian use.Authors:

Abstract
This paper examines the nature of Psychotherapy, determining its role in the hospital
settings, and presents the case of the role of counseling intervention among discordant
couples in NAUTH prep demonstration project. Four couples, who tested positive to HIV
due to pre-wedding investigation (three females, one male,) and two others, a male and a
female who tested positive following community HIV awareness, were followed for three
months: March – June 2016. The objective was to access the behavioural changes of these
clients in the process of enrolment to Prep. These clients were interviewed on four issues:
their concerns about positive status, feeling of guilt and stigma, suicidal thoughts and what
helped them to resolve their worries. One of the males was concerned about his health, three
of the females were concerned about their marriages, and one male had no worry. All of
them expressed feeling bad because of the stigmatization associated with the virus. Three of
them had suicidal thoughts, but were reassured of hope after counseling. All said counseling
helped them resolve their worries. Counseling /psychotherapy have been identified as sine
qua non for patients on HAART to achieve effective viral suppression and act as immune
boaster for patients on Positive Living.Author: Okpaleke Uche Victoria

Psychotherapy In Nigeria

Abstract
There is no exact word for psychotherapy in many Nigerian languages, numbering over 250.
But equivalent words exist for expression such as counselling and cognitive behaviour
therapy. The practice of these arts predated the advent of the Europeans. When modern
psychology arrived in our shores, we naturally adopted the Euro-American models of
psychotherapy. All that makes psychotherapy necessary can be found in our country: trauma
due to child abuse, and neglect, abuse of human dignity, tribal wars, political conflict,
poverty, migration and stress-provoking lifestyles, among others. The Aro village system
developed by Lambo is an attestation to the usefulness of some of our native approaches and
to the efficacy of social support that is inherent in the African traditional system. The
introduction of a bilingual group psychotherapy at Aro in the early 1990 was a natural
follow-up to this development. Group therapy is the most popular form of psychotherapy as it
is practised in most teaching hospitals and psychiatric establishments. Meseron therapy and
harmony restoration therapy are the two foremost indigenous approaches to psychotherapy
in Nigeria. Meseron therapy is cognitive-behavioural in orientation while harmony
restoration therapy is existential-phenomenological. Other therapies commonly taught and
practised include: Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy; Cognitive Behaviour Therapy;
Behaviour Therapy; The Psychodynamic Therapies, etc. Modern psychotherapy services are
available in private clinics/consultations, schools, hospitals and medical centres. The
services are offered by a wide variety of professionals ranging from clinical psychologists
and psychiatrist, to social workers, nurses and pastors. At present, focused training in
psychotherapy is inadequate, in spite of the efforts by the universities and the Nigerian
Association of Clinical Psychologists. This is an important lacuna that the School of
Psychotherapy and Health Sciences, Okija, has come to fill.Alfred Awaritefe

Psychotherapy Training in Nigeria

The scarcity of properly trained psychotherapists in Nigeria, on the one hand, and the increasing incidence of emotional problems resulting from poverty and underdevelopment, child abuse and neglect, trauma resulting from different forms of crime and abuse of human dignity, insecurity problems like terrorism, insurgency, kidnapping and hijacking, increasing stress-provoking lifestyles, tribal and national wars and conflicts, westernization and globalisation, and the HIV/AIDS pandemic, different forms of cancer, and all sorts of abuse of human dignity on the other hand, call for urgent need for establishment of institutions for formal psychotherapy training in Nigeria.
